ESSENTIALS FOR "A GIRL ON THE GO"

Howdy! Recently, I was asked by a lovely lady - Bex from The Street Complex - to compile a list of "essentials". I love putting lists like this together, but wanted a theme for my list to center around; and what better theme than an essential list for the wardrobe of a "on-the-move" go-getter. Though I have girl up the tittle there, this list is in actual fact unisex!

DECEMBER 1, 2012 // DIY DECEMBER

• 24 days till Christmas
• 21 days till the “Rapture”
• 30 days till 2013
• 1st day of DIY DECEMBER

We have a ton of milestones ahead of us now that it is officially the first day of the last month in beautiful 2012. And I am dubbing it DIY December (and I am 100% sure I am not alone in doing so) and will be aiming to dedicate December to DIY fantastic’ness. Regular programming will of course continue, but a heavy of dose of DIY will flourish the pages of Amped & Dangerous! From inspirations to tutorials, hopefully I can convert some of you to become DIY fiends yourself :)

There will be some excellent Christmas present ideas and some of my favourite DIYs from the internet as well as A&D’s past! This also means that I am challenging myself to post at least once a day for the whole of December - which I am very excited about!

PEDESTRIAN.TV PHOTO AWARDS

Wow, I am so incredibly excited by this opportunity, its insane. The annual Pedestrian.TV Photography Awards has chosen its finalists - and I am very proud to announce that I have been chosen as one of them :) 

So of course I would love to enlist your help in getting me to win the whole thing! If you fancy yourself as a bit of an art curator, click here to go and see the image in high res and "like" to vote!

The photo that you see above is the one I entered for P.TV's Mobile Photo category - a new category for photos captured only with your smart phones. And as a huge fan of iphonegraphie, I am happy to see that this category has been finally added on to the bill. Just goes to show that you don't necessarily have to parade around with the latest DSLRs to capture that perfect moment. 

But I do think everyone should look this fabulous when they have an SLR slung aorund their necks.

A little back story on this photo and why I chose this one for the competition: This photo always reminds me my love of cooking; especially Asian food. And I was cooking a Thai curry one night when I was chopping up the ingredients where I fell in love with the colour combination of the jewelled lilac red onions next to the firey birds-eye chillies. I just had to take a photo of it. And I love how the "1997" filter (on Instagram) helped make the photo pop even more. I love the colours in this photo and the way it all sits.

INTERNING IN NEW YORK / GETTING AHEAD & MANAGING EXPECTATIONS

Part two of three on my series of living and interning in New York! Well mainly working, because living arrangements in NY are a pain - and you should be able to work it out yourself! On part one of this series (click here for that post) I mainly discussed why and how I started my internship in New York, as well as a few tips when embarking on your own internship. So if you follow this like a HBO series (where they jump from scene to scene) by now you should be swimming in errands and office clippings, right? So how do you maintain positivity whilst making sure that your eye stays on the bigger picture; getting ahead in the internship (ie. trying to land a job!) and managing your own expectations? Well hopefully I can share some food for thought.

INTERNING IN NEW YORK / THE FIRST MONTH

Is intense.

Imagine all the television shows and books you have consumed about interning (or even working) in New York - have you got all the stereotypes and clichés in mind??? Well my experience so far has been exactly that!

My holiday to New York is technically a working holiday as I chose to take on a couple of internships here - why not right? And I honestly think this is a great decision for any Uni graduate or even student looking to expand his/her portfolio. Its an easy way to add experience as well as explore the industry that you want to work in - and see it as a bonus that it’s in a completely different country/city/continent. Of course this would only apply to select industries, but with a lot of research you should be able to find out what works for you and what doesn’t.

I managed to score myself a couple of internships, one with a Music PR company and the other with Portable. I am happy to report that after the first month I am very happy with both. Surprisingly I wasn’t as nervous or daunted as I should be, but I think that’s down to knowing that there was nothing to lose with this experience – only to gain. 

So I decided that anyone who happens upon this blog post is probably a) not American and b) curious to know how internships work here in the Big Apple.

M.I.A PLAYS BY HER OWN RULES

She always has, and she always will.

And she's not about to change all that when releasing her new art book come visual diary, M.I.A, this October. The book is being published together with Rizzoli New York and is a curation of her visual outputs since her college days at Central St. Martins in London; telling her story through her famous stylistic collages, photos and prints.

I can't wait to get this book, and seeing as the book is coming out so close to my birthday, its going to be my present to myself. I couldn't think of a more fitting gift, considering my trip at the moment and the stage I am in my life.

MINDY KALING LIVE (NOT!) FROM #NYFW // VIA PORTABLE.TV

Happy Friday people! How are we this fine Friday?
But more importantly what are you doing for the weekend? And to my amazing Australian readers - you are well and truly in the swing of the weekend.

If you were anthing like me, over the last nine days of New York Fashion week, you have been glued to your smart phone. Trying to absorb the Tweets, Tumblrs, Posts, WordPresses, RedIts, Instas and many more for our daily (hourly?) dose of #NYFW amazingness. But one hilarious lady caught most of the attention thanks to her special Tweets.

From (allegedly) flirting with James Franco to bar hopping with Carine Roitfield, Mindy Kaling probably lived #NYFW the way we all wish we could have. Her "fake fashion tweets" were the best out of all the NYFW tweets - and dare I say she was more entertaining than the crowd who actually attended #NYFW - haha!

So, what better way to help celebrate the end of such a sartorially glamourous week by bringing to life some of our favourite Kaling #NYFW tweets.

JUSTIN BIEBER - BOYFRIEND

I think I might have finally hit the wall. No, no, you don't have to double take - you read right, I'm going to be discussing Justin Bieber's Boyfriend.

Why? For the same reasons as why I can't get the song out of my head. Not only is the song super intriguing to me, I can't help but toy with the idea that it might finally be the end of an era for one the biggest teen stars this decade has seen (apart from JoJo of course). More on this further below.

FRIDAY ROUNDUP: THELANDING, MICHAEL BUBLE, DIY CHRISTMAS CRACKERS

So my Photoshop program decided to die. :( So I am doing this Friday Roundup without it :)

1. LISTEN TO MICHAEL BUBLE'S CHRISTMAS ALBUM.

Cause Buble and Christmas carols just make everything better. Even when the ham and turkey is burnt, and your young cousin has decided to open his/her presents - as well as yours. 

2. HAVE A LOOK AT SARGASSO SEA'S "LANDING" PHOTOSHOOT. 

This was the photoshoot that I assisted on a week ago. It was really one of the best days :)

FUTURISTIC WOODLANDS // BEHIND THE SCENES

Heyyyyy Hoooooo, Heyyyyy Hoooo.
So, I had the pleasure to join the incredibly talented (and super nice) BB from Sargasso Sea on their Planet Kepler shoot this past Saturday. I practically stalk on Sargasso Sea and their unique aesthetic. Plus these girls are hilarious and add a breath of fresh air in the whole blogging world :)

It was a brilliant day, filled with glitter, DIY fashion and expensive clothes. Team that with a beautiful location and incredible photographer in Ben Robinson and his assistant Dave, and you have one surreal shoot. Believe it or not, aliens stranded in woodlands makes for some beautiful images.

The shoot featured some Foxton Danger, Carla Zampatti, Reverse Garbage, BlackMilk, various vintage finds and one amazing jacket by fashion student Kathleen (check out below). I helped out with hair and makeup and assisted in some styling. My favourite moment was attempting to recreate glittery lips and having to crouch down whilst holding up a makeshift corset. Oh the life... But I think mostly, it was just really cool to hang out with new friends and some really talented people.

 I absolutely love this last shot of Ben and Dave. It reminds me of the Vogue editorial featured at the end of The September Issue, where Grace Coddington captured the documentary team in a colour blocking fashion shoot.

DIY: BIRTHDAY CARDS

The extent of my thrifty-ness bears little competition. And one the stupidest things I think people pay money for are birthday cards. I would much rather you gave me the $5 cash you used to pay for the card, then the card itself.
If you're like me, you have a ton of magazines, a tumblr full of inspirational pictures, and some creativity at your fingertips ready to be turned into a more thoughtful birthday card, then the ones Hallmark designs. I keep all my birthday cards (store bought and DIY'ed) and I am sure (hope!) that my friends and family keep all the cards I make them.

The basic tools you need in making a beautiful handmade card are so affordable and guesses are; you probably already have these items lying around :)

1. IMAGES STOCK
This includes old issues of magazines (I prefer magazines like Russh, Oyster, Shop Till You Drop, Frankie, Peppermint) this is cause they mostly have white space, and item photos, as opposed to gossip magazines where its just photos of celebrities and advertisement. You could also use newspapers or even old birthday cards that other people have given you. You could also cheat a little and just print out the exact pictures you want from the internet.
Some of my favourites sites for this include Tumblr, We Heart It, Pintinterest and Tag Galaxy.

2. SHARP SCISSORS (the sharpest are fabric scissors)
3. GLUE (I like these corner ones, they make sticking so easy)
4. STRONG CARD STOCK (for the base of the card, I was lucky that I was given a whole box of stock card from my grandmother who passed down her own card making supplies to me). But I am sure you could head to Spotlight or Office works and get a box of heavy white stock for under $20.

AND AWAY YOU GO!
My process is quite methodical. I start off by folding and trimming my card to size. And have that sitting under some weight, to keep the crispness. Then I go hunting for pictures, I flicked through magazines and choose images that best relate to the receiver of the card. Make it fun, make it personable, make it memorable.

MBFF WRAP UP: CAMILLA, FOXTONDANGER, REBECCAMANNING, & ROOPA

Oh wow, what an amazing morning it was yesterday!
The weather might have been gloomy, but Brisbane fashion lovers we're ready for an all out Resort and Swimwear show.

MBFF Brisbane had their Group Resort show yesterdat as part of Brisbane Fashion Week happening all this week, so head to the website get you some fashion loving tickets. Yesterday's show featured Kaftan Queens Camilla & Foxton Danger, swimwear goddess Rebecca Manning, Roopa Pemmaraju, Saucy Rose, Jets & White Sands.

I was able to get backstage and have got some awesome photos for you cool people. As per usual, Fashion Show was hectic. People yelling, running and multi-tasking like mofos. It was an amazing sight. I absolutely loved the hair and makeup, very chic and simple. My favourites on the day were definitely Foxton Danger, Camilla and Rebecca Manning. So on to the photos, I say.
