JUSTIN BIEBER - BOYFRIEND

I think I might have finally hit the wall. No, no, you don't have to double take - you read right, I'm going to be discussing Justin Bieber's Boyfriend.

Why? For the same reasons as why I can't get the song out of my head. Not only is the song super intriguing to me, I can't help but toy with the idea that it might finally be the end of an era for one the biggest teen stars this decade has seen (apart from JoJo of course). More on this further below.

So let me make myself quite clear. Please don't for a second think that I'm (sadly admitting) to be really hung up on this song for it's lyrics or for it's highly inappropriate (for his demographic) video clip. I think it's the idea that for the first time, we're finally hearing snippets of the talent that landed Justin Bieber on Island Def Jam's bill. The song doesn't elude to even a hint of that sugary pop chemical that got him so famous - and I think that's a good thing, something which a lot of other music reviewers are agreeing with (The SourceMTV).

So lets talk about the track's production work. It should be no surprise that its the production quality and styles which contributes to the success of the song. Mike Posner, celebrated artist in his own right (remember this track), produced and co-wrote the track with the Biebs. This is I'm sure is just as awesome for Posner as it is for Bieber. And now that I've said that, I bet you can definitely hear Posner's influence in the song. There is also a bit of Justin Timberlake'ness about the song which is where I think has me on side (I'm a massive massive massive fan of J.T, post and during N*Sync).

And if I were to be a betting woman, I think this is exactly the kind of direction that I think J. Bieb's management group are transcending him to.  Totally wouldn't be surprised if he started sporting a crew cut after this. With that said, I am actually really curious to hear the rest of the album.

So there you go One Direction, if this isn't a formal handing over the teenie-bopper crown - then I don't know what is. The track is a clever mix, smoothly transitioning Biebs to the 'next level' whilst still maintaining his large fan base. As much as I don't dig the cheesy video clip and the multiple "Swag, swag, swag, swag" in the song -  this is definitely one small step for Island Def Jam and one giant leap for Justin Bieber - helping him to solidify a possible career longevity in such a precarious section of the industry.

What do you think of the track? Had you heard it?
Did you think it was someone else at first? Do you think there is more to the Biebs?
Let the conversation begin!

  1. Totally agree Kaz. The first thing I thought of when I heard this was the JT influences, which made me happy. And as annoying as the faux-gansta thing is, at least its a little bit removed from sugar pop.
