THE INTERTNET, YEARS & YEARS AND DONNIE TRUMPET & THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

Hi old friend, how are you?

It's been a little over a year since my last post and a lot has happened. I moved overseas and have been working at one of my dream companies and living that NY life, you know. But this post isn't about catching you up on life (and you can do all the stalking you want via social links below), its about sharing a snap shot of where I am now... well, musically anyway.

I was walking to meet a friend for coffee this morning, it was a balmy 32 degrees with the sun blaring down onto the Brooklyn pavements and me jamming to some tunes that I have been loving recently. And something grabbed me to reflect on my favorite summer songs which lead me to think about my favorite summer albums. I soon become very chuffed to think that, even though I work in music, I still find it inspiring to continue my engagement with it in an active way. It lead me to break my blogging hiatus and bring you some of my favourite summer albums of 2015. Enjoy!

1. COMMUNION // YEARS & YEARS

Years & Year's debut album is the best way to start the summer days. Full of punchy electronica

and enough soul/rhythm to get you out of those slightly sweat soaked sheets, and kick start your morning. Communion is light and airy, thanks to the flirty synths and British pop sensibilities, anchored by front man Olly Alexander's soothing vocals. Standout tracks for me are "Take Shelter" and "Ties," but you may know their singles "King", "Desire" or "Real" - all great, all needed in your music app of choice.

2. SURF // DONNIE TRUMPET & THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT

There was a lot of hype for this album, and honestly after listening to the first taste off the album "Wanna Be Cool", I wasn't sure what the fuss was all about. But not long after listening to Billboard's (and one of my favorite podcasts out there) "Must Hear Music" podcast's recent episode, where all three hosts raved about the album, did I give it a full listen. Surf is one of those albums you need to hear in full from front to back and in order to not only enjoy it (rare in a lot of albums these days) but to also appreciate what Donnie Trumpet & Co are trying to establish with this new project of theirs. Full of special guests (Jeremih, Big Sean, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae) if you're liking where this new wave of alternative/future soul music is going (and a fan of the horn section), give Surf a go and be pleasantly surprised by where it takes you.

3. EGO DEATH // THE INTERNET

This list wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of this album. Since first listening to it in its entirety, I knew that it would be come one of my favorite albums of the year. And it still remains at the top of my list. Ego Death is heady, sultry and just a real special affair - just how anyone's summer night should be. Syd's voice and subject matter are nothing like what is out right now and the production and backing fills it out to give you an album that is both cohesive and fill with stand alone tracks. By far one of their best works, I have been playing this album non stop and its hard to pick favorites... but for now I enjoy "Girl," "Gabby" and "Just Sayin/I Tried"... all below for you.

I can honestly put it out there that I can/will never get sick of this song. I think its absolutely pop-perfect in that signature Black Eyed Peas way. Don’t Phunk With My Heart is one of my all time Guilty Pleasures.

I have never been ashamed to admit that I am an avid fan of the Black Eyed Peas. In fact you can read my Will.I.Am Guilty Pleasure post here. I have their whole discography including pre-Fergie B.E.P as well as the newer ones, although I will admit it is not as good as traditional B.E.P stuff. I feel that a lot of B.E.P’s tracks are easy listening with really good story telling elements – which I appreciate! Some of my first memories of enjoying B.E.P songs are me making up music video ideas in my head to the songs.

Which brings me to easily transition to talk about the video clip for Don’t Phunk With My Heart. If you need a refresher or have never seen it – seriously click play below. It is seriously such a well produced and executed video clip! B.E.P have really memorable video clips, but this one for me takes the cake!

Themed around the game show, the video clip really gives the song a different kind of energy. You could even mute the video, watch it, and still be enthralled by the content. Will.I.Am is super captivating in the way he breaks the fourth wall and sings into the camera. And hello – the amazing costume design! There are elements of 70s retro with a real modern street edge (for the mid 2000 anyway!) and I was seriously obsessed with Fergie’s hairstyles in this video – I wanted damn long braids too! And the cute boho scarf band towards the end – obsessed.

My latest purchase was this beautiful J Crew woolen khaki coat I bought at my local Goodwill near work for $10!!!!! It was originally $19.99, but was on a half-off sale. Can you believe that?

Seriously,
thrifting (or op shopping as us Aussies know it as) is seriously on
another level here in New York! Which shouldn't really come as surprise.
But I was under the impression that because a majority of financially
savvy New Yorkers would have cleaned out thrift stores around town. But
boy was I wrong. I have consistently found amazing pieces at charity
shops around New York City and Brooklyn. So I have found that these
little tips have been really helping me score some good ones.

Do a lot of research and figure out the closest/most convenient op shop you have - The more convenient it is, the more you will make an effort to go thrifting.

Try and make it there every week. New stock gets on a weekly basis in op shops, so you can always find something!

Sign up to the newsletter - You will find out about special deals, discounts and opening specials.

Get a loyalty card. In America - they even have loyalty/punch cards for op shops. Best idea ever!

Don't stick to size or gender restrictions. Especially if the store is having a sale, people will not be diligent in returning an item back to its appropriate place - some of the best finds are always hiding in the wrong spots.

Hit up the "recently returned" racks that stand outside the changing rooms. Its like a specially curated section of items that other people have deemed worthy of trying on but for some reason didnt work. So when you have little to no time - hit it up first!

Find a good seamstress - They can alter and fix amazing op shop items to be more wearable, and chances are these pieces will last a lot longer in your wardrobe.

And honestly, it doesn't even matter where you in the world, these tips will serve you very well !

Twitter: I just made it easy for myself and have bookmarked '#NYFW' as my fav feed and it just automatically updates tweets, instagrams and twitpics of everyone involved.

I keep saying this but seriously, 2013 is the year for rap and hip hop. Among many other amazing hip hop albums that have come out this year, Doris by Odd Future's Earl Sweatshirt is one that I have been anticipating highly! After hearing Chum, I was hooked and excited to hear more from the newly re-invented Earl Sweatshirt. Doris came out two days ago and it pretty much blew up all over the internet. I got my brother Sureiyan (find his blog I Like Your Thursday Personality here) to pre-emptively review the album - 'cause its everything I want to say but said in a more eloquently way. Read the review after the jump.

Quick notes:

• The album is akin to a movie, high and lows. Drama and comedy. Builds the closer you get to the end.

• Touches of 90s psychedelic hip hop, which I very into at the moment.

• The album is completely different to what we were expecting. For which Earl has been quoted will lose him existing fans but also gain new ones. Either way seems to be win/win.

• More mature, harder rhymes and completely unique to Earl's sounds.

• My favourites; Chum (I seriously can not get enough of this song!), Whoa and 523.

The uncanny prodigy rapper Earl Sweatshirt of California’s OFWGKTA gave all his dying fans an album which I consider worth spending money on. Doris, an album I’ve been scratching my head for months to listen to, finally came out on the 20th of August and I welcomed the first studio (under Earl’s own label) album with open arms. I was warming my ears to the expected heavy wordplay and skulking beat - but Doris (which I consider to be one of the top 5 rap albums to drop in 2013) has a slightly different feel to it. To put it mildly.

The first single I heard from Doris was Earl and I thought it was great. From the misogynistic views in his earlier content, Earl has grown up profusely to even amplify the greatness in his lyrics.

Chum was a preview of what this album going to be like and it didn’t disappoint. Earl kept to himself - just a more polished version. So, I’m not surprised to learn that many of his fans disagreed with this track. Earl spits with a newly acquired deep and sluggish voice...which quickly changes with Whoa, bringing back some of his disappointed fans back on the Earlwagon. Earl delivers rhymes with such complexity even I don’t know how his tongue isn’t all twisted up after spitting a few hard, rebellious lines. Then after weeks of anticipation, there was Doris, named after his grandmother who passed away while the album was in the making.

The album opens with Pre, a track involving SK La’Flare which didn't excite me so much. I was hoping I would fall into Earl’s world of confusion with the smart wordplay but I was pretty disappointed with this opener.

After feeling a little let down with the opener, I hear Vince Staples (another rapper to look out for) asking Earl to man up and just deliver. I personally thought this track should have been the opener. Burgundy which in my opinion is dope, not only because Pharrell produced it, but because the content holds so much meaning with the mention of his grandmother passing away and the expectations of him being as famous as his celebrated dad - but Earl ignores all this by comparing himself to Clark Gable who just doesn't give a damn.

When I say enjoy Odd Future’s music, I really do enjoy any piece of music that comes out of the group. If it came from Mike G or Tyler, the Creator, they’re all making music which is pleasing to the ear. The next two tracks has Domo Genesis and Frank Ocean. Both of which killed it with their respective verses. Sunday which features Frank Ocean where both reflect their experience with pot and relationships. This mellow beat was perfect was Frank Ocean's voice but it didn’t completely stole the show as Earl did deliver some personal lines which wont be overlooked by many.

The fifth track on Doris which together with Earl featured two killers in the rap game, Vince Staples and Cassey Veggies. Hive truly represents the meaning of syntax and double entendres which is why its my favourite track on the album. The track reminded me of Earl’s big brother, Tyler and the songs he produced on Goblin which had a sense of foreshadowing evil. It was that sort of menacing mood which attracted the youth to Tyler and his posse. Quite evidently, in Hive, you see the same sort of tone to it which was pleasing to the die hard Earl Sweatshirt fan base. Its one thing to spit rhymes but its completely another dimension when Earl spits. In this one song alone, he’s exhibit the lethal killer he is with words. Kudos to Rap Genius for putting up such a website cause if it wasn’t for them, the meaning behind Earl’s content would be overlooked and that would be a crying shame. "Salivary glands, lighter fluid for the matchbox"- Even Earl can sum up his verses in one line without getting fired up like other rappers you see nowadays. A favourable mention must be given to Vince Staples. I honestly do think he has one of the best verses in the album. There’s nothing much I can say about but to have a good listen to it. Staples killed it.

The following tracks kept the good mood up. I was impressed with the features that Earl hooked up with. He had Mac Miller, RZA and Casey Veggies to say the least which all gave their tiny contribution in making this album a monster. Sasquatch, Centurion, Molasses and Knight were all dope tracks with good beats and sick verses. I was reasonable with my expectation with this album as it was Earl’s official LP album and it didn’t fall victim to the shortcomings of most modern rap such as Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail which in my opinion only had a few great tracks worth mentioning. Gnarly vocals, intense instrumentals and a diss on Chris Brown alongside touching issues like the famous LA’s recession as well as the pressure he was under in anticipation with this album - I think Earl killed it. Earl definitely has a kind of lyrical prowess with hints of diversity which makes for listening to his songs more and more interesting every time you hear him. With Doris, I feel Earl has a secured a strong future by dropping such a masterpiece which does not underwhelm.

It's like watching a Justin Timberlake video on K-Pop stroids! The song itself is super catchy (no idea what the words are... but I am
going to go and find out) what with the beautifully pop beat and
infectious melody. But its the over all misc-en-scene of the production that really captures my attention - clearly after one google search, I am not the only one.

Jak+Jil

Howdy! Recently, I was asked by a lovely lady - Bex from The Street Complex - to compile a list of "essentials". I love putting lists like this together, but wanted a theme for my list to center around; and what better theme than an essential list for the wardrobe of a "on-the-move" go-getter. Though I have girl up the tittle there, this list is in actual fact unisex!

I find that I am always on the go. Whether its for my freelance work, actual work and/or a day of thrifting and DIY’ing, I am always running from one space to the other. So my wardrobe consists of many pieces that are function for durability, changeability and allows me to work througout the day in both comfort and style. Whether you’re a dude or a lady, o if you’re a fellow on-the-go-er, I suggest these babies remain a constant in our every changing wardrobes.

T-Shirts

Plain or printed. You can’t go wrong with t-shirts, they are so versatile. A perfectly fitting t-shirt can make one looking super chic in such an effortless way. Its the staple that can save your outfits allowing it to be mixed and matched with practically everything! Its can be tailored and feminine when worn with a printed skirt or slap on a statement necklace if you’re ready to par-tee! And when you grow bored of your plain t-shirts, why not amp it up by embellishing it a little (ideas here and here).

Jeans

The working man’s favourite trousers. Or woman, in my case. I love my jeans, I wear it dressed up and down - to parties and award ceremonies - I honestly can not see myself living without a good pair of jeans, they are the perfect addition to tie any outfit together. And being so durable, they make an excellent piece for when I’m running my multitude of errands.

Perfume

Every person should have their signature scent - but I also believe that this can change from season to season. I find that there is something so powerful about perfumes, they can set the tone of a person, even before they are introduced. There is nothing more satisfying that when you’re about to meet friends at a bar after a long and hard day of doing work - to be able to splash on some Gucci Flora or Alien just to revive yourself.

Transeasonal Jacket

Whether
its a parka, camo or denim jacket, this piece of clothing is a must
have for the on-the-move gal. Its the perfect layering piece, you can
protect yourself from any crazy weather or all those clumsy coffee
spills (oh no, just me?) from ruining the perfectly curated outfit
underneath. My khaki parka is my Superman cape.

Watch

A
woman on the go can get halted quick when she is out of time. And
although almost everything comes with a clock these days (phones,
computers & tablets) - a watch is essential to give a polished
look to your outfit.

Converse

Flats
and heels are okay, but Converses add a certain street credibility or
edge to outfits which I find very sexy. The classic Converse All-Star
are stand the test of time and are so comfortable, you wished you owned a
pair in every colour. But I would stick to getting a black and white
pair first and then get a statement colour - mine currently are a
beautiful plum/oxblood colour.

Tote Bag

When
I’m thrifting or going from a “work to bar” kind of situation, my tote
bag is my holy grail. It fits other essentials like my make up bag,
perfume, and possibly even a change of shoes to ensure that I can indeed
transition from working girl to socialite. But when I am thrifting or
hunting for DIY supplies, I find it the best accessory so that I can
stash all my bits and bobs, instead of wrestling and balancing ten
different carry bags.

What do you think of the list? What would you add?

That is definitely not the question.

'Cause it seems like "twerking" is just about all the rage now.

Busta Rhyme's new single "Twerk It" ft Tosh & Nikki Minaj was released recently and it features a new sound from the hip hop legend with a more striped back and heavy bass edge. I actually really like this song, despite the slow build. But when it does build, it builds good - and that's kind of Pharrel's (producer) trademark. Although surprisingly, despite its' title, the song's video clip tastefully refrains from too much overtly sexual (physically impossible for some) dance move. Unlike this not-so-subtle video and tune from Diplo where I first learned of the "twerk". The music video and dance move made such an impact that when it was released, fans immediately took it and started uploading their twerking attempts - which Mad Decent decided to run a comp with.

Though Diplo's influence - who I credit to really getting the movement up and running - has been around since mid last year; there seems to be an increase of twerkers, twerking and twerk related material. Everyone from Major Lazer to Jay-Z have commented on this new pop culture phenomenon. Though largely centered around hip hop music, twerking has made it into mainstream pop music, thanks to the one and only Miley Cyrus with her newest single "We Cant Stop" where she can be seen twerking to her own music. Despite it's overtly sexual context, the dance movement doesn't seem to be offending mass society and therefor it continues to grow. I honesty think this is due to how physically difficult it can be to #twerk and still look good.

There aren't many instances where I find myself looking up to toddlers. Although there are some rare instances where I feel that they might just have it better than I did when I was their age / do.

Chloe Clancy is only one of the examples I have. Who is Chloe Clancy? She is the daughter or Christopher and Kelly Clancy - proud managers of the Odd Future crew. Since discovering this bad ass, I am totally in love with her. She is both adorable and super cool with a fashion sense to match her environment and cultural prowess. When not hanging out with some of hip hop's best new talent, she spends her day helping out her parents help manage and promote aforementioned talented crew. Gurllllll you got it good.

Happy Monday lovely people! How ya been?
Weather here has been ridiculous but at the same time it has cooled down a little allowing for my favourite season to trickle through; Autumn. Layers anyone?? Can't wait!!! On to some new music lovely people!

1. FINE CHINA - CHRIS BROWN

Synonomous with Rihana abuser, Chris Brown has been followed closely by hate, conroversy and just plain bad news. But instead fading away into obsecurity, a more heavily tattooed and stylish Chris Brown shows the world that he can most definitely bounce back with Rihanna in tow. I actually really like this song. Its pop-licious but has a great beat and musical parts to it which I can see many people jamming to. CB might have just turned a whole new corner with this one. Won't go as far as saying that he can or has redeem himself with the new single - but certainly is taking the right steps in moving forward and continuing with his music - 'cause one thing no one can take away from Chris Brown is his ridiculous talent as a singer and entertainer.

2. BREAK MY HEART IN 2 - ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS

I love me a good instrumental slash sample song and alongside people like RJD2 and Wax Tailor, I am now going to add Ancient Astronauts to my chill out playlists. And how could I not enjoy this, the first couple of minutes of the song is pure horn sections - hell yes! It's easy to listen to but still interesting so that you don't lose sight at how beautifully Ancient Astronauts have mixed layers of sounds and sampling together to produce a beautifully curated single. They can break my heart anyway with sounds like this. Bring on some more!

>> Facebook

3. NICE AND SLOW - MAX FROST

How freaking sweet is this song. Its so pretty! And hellooooo killer voice! No surprises here that it's from Austin musician; Max Frost. Frost has most certainly graced the pages of A&D, for that earlier post, click here. He's a multi-instrumentalist with a voice that could melt butter. So nothing else to add here - just click play and sit back to enjoy.

>> Facebook

4. IFHY - TYLER, THE CREATOR FT PHARRELL

Yep. Still obsessed with Tyler, The Creator's newest album; Wolf. Since writing this piece a couple of weeks ago, I have been listening to this album non stop - and I mean non stop to the point where I haven't seeked out new stuff. There are many track on that album that I would all a favourite, but at the moment IFHY is a must-hear for me which I try and impose on everyone. Some amazing word play and rhymes in this track - "Its that my mood change for you like these goddamn seasons; I fall for you" - Tyler gets emotional and very expressive. The intro draws you in compelling to hear more, at then BAM! at minute 0.50 it drops and its the killer beat and production skill that carries the song. And then soulful sounds of Pharrell bleeds through and takes the track to a whole new level of soft grunge pretty Odd Future track similar to something you would hear from Frank Ocean or The Internet. Like I said, obsessed.

Hope you enjoyed, leave me a comment below on what you thought of the week's picks!

I have only just started playing the full stream of Tyler's newest album; Wolf (out officially April 2) and it is just so good! The album was prematurely released for streaming on the Odd Future SoundCloud page. And whilst the production value and sounds have matured and evolved, Tyler's signature self deprecating and humorous raps have stayed. Since the release of the single. Domo 23, I have been in high anticipation of this album and so far it has not disappointing! Boasting collaboration of the likes Pharrel, Erykah Badu and of course other Odd Future members like Frank Ocean and Hodgy - Wolf is dynamic, powerful and flows very smoothly - making it such easy listening! So what you waiting for? Click here to listen to the full set and let me know what you think!

I have been toying with this topic for quite some time now. I have had long and meaningful conversations with people I look up to and admire in our community about this. Discussing with them about the topic of when they first thought they were into style and looking good. With a lot of the people I have met, they wouldn't necessarily have considered themselves to be "into fashion". But I would disagree, I believe that if you have taken the time to think about how you get dressed in the morning - no matter where you're going; work, school, running errands or even to the gym, if you make conscious decisions about how you want to reflect yourself to society, I believe that you care about style and how you choose to portray yourself to society.

The thought occurred to me when I actually purchased my very own pair of vintage denim overalls. I was piss broke, and couldn't really afford to be purchasing anything since I am technically supposed to be saving. But I found the perfect pair of denim overalls circa 90s on Etsy. I had been obsessed with repurchasing a pair of denim overalls since this post. And I wouldn't settle for one that wasn't what I had in mind. After waiting what felt like forever for my overalls to arrive from Albany, USA, my pair arrived and I put them on straight away! My grandparents thought I was crazy but for all the right reason. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for having purchased an awesome pair of denim overalls.

I remember looking at them thinking... "Holy shit, I actually did this - I just bought myself a pair of denim overalls". Now I know most people would think of me and say that I was long into fashion way before my Denim Overall moment. But it was at this precise moment where I consciously reflected on how important style and clothes are to me. Style and other stylish people make me lust after things which most people would consider silly or frivolous.

I'm into style, and I am into fashion and the way my wardrobe reflects on my identity and adds to my personality. I am also into other people who share the same fascination for clothes and how simple thread and cloth can reflect, inspire and transcend emotions you otherwise wouldn't be able to communicate. And I think this is one reason why street style is a huge past time for a lot of people, we enjoy seeing how other people choose to wear clothes - 'cause its something we all do, and finding the difference in how others communicate their style.

My hunt for the perfect denim jackets has stretched across not only time, but continents too. And I was adamant not to settle for a wash or style that I wasnt 100% happy with. And I was discriminatory - I searched for old ones and news ones in store. The one that came close was a Levi’s pair - but the boxy shape was just not working with me. But I finally found one jacket that ticked pretty much all boxes. Except for one tiny detail. This is the story of how I successfully saved one of my favourite denim pieces.

I found my version of the perfect denim jacket when I was thrifting/op shopping in the Lower East Side in New York. Now, I can not for the life of me remember what the place was called but it was one of the best op shops I have been into! It was privately owned, so not like a charity shop - a true New York style vintage store. They had beaded dresses, the perfect pair of loafers and letterman jackets! But I headed straight for the denim section and started rifling through the jacket section. I picked my guy up from the line and tried it one straight away. It fit like a glove! Better still it was a vintage (??) Wrangler denim jacket. I was stoked!!! But then I turned the jacket around to inspect it from all sides and then this happened:

What?!?!?!? I am pretty sure I made an audible sigh. But despite the glitter purple pen confessing its love for Tay Tay Swift - I knew I couldnt pass the jacket - I could fix it right? What’s a little glue pen? I took it home and got my DIY one. But one the way in the subway, I was trying to pick off the glitter with little success. I even Google’d "how to remove glitter pen". It was a mess!! Other than sanding down the jacket, I couldn’t think of what else I could do. It was definitely then, a case of bloggers to the rescue. I started seeing customised denim jackets on some of my favourite bloggers:

And then I remembered that I still had my Mulberry tote bag which we got from last year’s New York Fashion Night Out - it was perrrrrrrrfect combination!

Process:

All I had to do was cut the fabric to
size and folded down the edges and sewed it on the back to give it a
clean finish. Then I just pinned the fabric to the jacket and started
sewing it down. I used a dark cotton (obvi!) so I didnt have to be super
strict with stitch length etc. And hey presto - I saved my jacket.

I freaking love it and I think it works best with an all black out fit or a cute skirt and tshirt top. Hope this has given you some inspiration on how to save one of your op shop purchases!

Howdy strangers! I know super long time since I have spoken to you all - well long time in terms of internet speak, but I'm hear with new music - so lets enjoy!

1. AUSTRA - HOME

Oh helllllll yes! I am well loving the new single from Canadian electro pop group Austra! Its so deep carried by Katie's bravado voice! And then combined with the subtle dance beats/bits, gives the song such a fresh perspective! And that violin bit! Ahhhh! Its perfect! I am very much looking forward to their new album; Olympia!

2. JUNIP - LINE OF FIRE

Love love love this song. Its my track of the week. Its simple, folky and very melancholic. Easy listening for sure from the Swedish trio, Junip. Now, if you think you kind of recognise that (freaking!) beautiful voice - you probably do. Its the effortlessly talented Jose Gonzalez. Need I say more? No... enjoy!

3. IGGY AZALEA - WORK

I just had to. I posted a status on le Facebook when I heard the single when it premiered last week - about how I am both intrigued and confused by Iggy Azalea. I watched the video clip and straight away wrote her off as a poser; but due to my pop culture curiousity, I had to delve deeper and started watching interviews and researching it on wiki. And to my amazement found out that she is Australian! How crazy. All that aside, I am still 50/50 about "Work". There is no doubt that she can spit, but I have never been of that dirrrrrty south rap, so I can;t completely get down with it. What I do like though that "Work.. Work..Work.." hook. Its pure lo-fi dance goodness. So undecided about the whole thing - isn't one Azalea enough? What do you think?

4. SOFT BULLETS - POSTERITY

Its beautifully soft and has some killer hooks and turns making it the best "no thinking" music I think. Whether you're out running or just doing some laundry, this is the kind of track you would want to be jamming to! Soft Bullets new single is produced by the talented David Kosten (Everything Everything & Bat For Lashes) so it;s a no-brainer that I am into it. If you dig this - you will definitely love their other track; Another Chance!

And that's all from me folks. What do you think of this week's picks?
Any additions of your own??? xx

Some pretty cray cray news came through this morning. Official partners and organisers of illustrious fashion street party; Fashion Night Out, have officially announced that the event will not be happening in the US this year. A country wide event that usually kicks off the NY Spring/Summer Fashion Week takes to the bench, with the event only running in selected international cities.

Now, this sucks. Because I had the best time at last year's NYC Fashion Night Out event. It was great to be able to rub shoulders with bloggers, celebrities and just generally enthusiastic fashion lovers. You can read about that here and here. Organisers are hoping that by putting FNO US on hiatus, stores and brands can help save monies for more sales friendly uses (crazy...).

But this makes me think about the other "selected international" cities and whether or not they will take FULL ADVANTAGE of this situation. There are still celebrities and bloggers out there that who will want to celebrate the beginnings of a new fashion season. So, I'd be planning big and getting a budget together to get the party happening in said cities. Imagine what a game changer it would be for such a globalised fashion industry (in which we operate in) if you could help take focus away from NY and highlight your own city during such an important time in the industry and media landscape.

Plan a huge party, get those celebrities and bloggers to you and stream live that shit across the world. Show them you can help fill the New York sized void in 2013. Hey Australia! You reading? 'Cause this was for you.

Hello lovely people, how are we this fine Monday?
Well more rainy and wet then fine really. In Brisbane anyway. Pretty eventful weekend on this side of the town what with Blink 182 and Soundwave making crowds go crazy. It's been great having so many out of towners who pilgrim their way to the hardcore (??) rock festival every year.

But on with new music.

1. LONDON GRAMMAR - METAL AND DUST

I told you these guys would not dissapoint with their second single. Click here for London Grammar's first single; Hey Now (which is one of my favourites!). Listen up gang, you are going to be hearing a lot from these English artists especially if you are into the likes of Florence & The Machine, CSS etc. The second single Metal & Dust has a very 90s techno vibe about - kinda what you hear in a disco tech from said era. I love it - I think it stays with their super soft and etheral sound but adds an interesting punch with the synths at the tail end. What do you think? Are we loving this new sound?

2. STEADY SUN - ACTRESS

I love a good into. And Actress by Steady Sun definitely has one of the best ones I have heard this year. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a pretty instrumental. But then vocal starts up and it just blends so beautifully into a song thats easy and interesting listening. Although, I can't do this song justice like Henry can from Audio Cred. So click that for more. I can;t wait to hear from these guys, I think this song is super chic sneak peek of a blues meets psych rock sound that I oh so love.

So, if you have enjoyed the picks so far, chances are you are probably not going to dig the next two. Haha. But if you do - YOU ARE RAD.

3. THEOPHILLUS LONDON - SNOW ANGEL FT TROUBLE ANDREW

I thought this was Lupe Fiasco when I first heard this song. So I was pretty (pleasantly?) surprised when I saw that this was Theophillus London. Its the awesome sample that has made the new one from London land in this issue's of NewMusicMonday. But other than that there is nothing else for me to add. Its a pretty obvious song I guess for this particular genre. So I am not blown away but I am also equally loving the sound.

4. 50 CENT - WE UP FT KENDRICK LAMAR & KIDD KIDD

Now I don't really care what you have to say about having included 50 Cent in an issue of NewMusicMonday. This song is dope! I think partly thanks to the addition of Kendrick Lamar and Kidd Kidd. Its softer (I've always loved 50's voice, and this songs show its off beautifully) and much more on the wave the new kind of hip hop coming out (Wiz Khalifa/Kanye/Odd Future etc etc). It has a great hook and chorus and the verses arent bad. Its catchy and again, another easy listening track. I am pretty damn curious to hear more from 50's new album - especially if these are the kind of tracks that we can look forward too.

Yes. It’s happening, I am discussing Miley (Destiny Hope) Cyrus fashion status. Miley’s incredibly nuanced stylistic evolution is one that intrigues me deeply. Unlike a Vanessa Hudgens or Demi Lavato, this Disney alumni’s sartorial changes happened what seemed like overnight. BAM! Haircut Maam, we have a new Miley! And I love her for it! I feel like this a moment in life we all wish we could have, to be able to reinvent ourselves almost overnight. I feel that Miley dresses for herself (something to admire in today's society), and has painstakingly carved (with help) her own signature look instead of blending into the comfort of mainstream fashion.

Now I am sure all of you are thinking, never would someone like Miley be
considered a fashion icon. right? Well not too many anyway. But that’s
the beauty of her transformation. It’s so unexpected. I first came across Miley Cyrus as the talented and dual persona as Hannah Montana. The show, anchored by her famous singer father, catapulted Miley into popularity as a teenage/tween icon. Back here, her style was laid back and much reflected her character - it was cute country meets city chic. Think tunics, bell bottoms, hot pants and boots. And all that curly hair of course.

But as we all have experienced, Miley’s outfits became a little
more “experimental” (it’s the most PC way I can phrase this) and to be
quite honest, I think this phase really let Miley’s fashionable image down. It was super trampy and not refined at all. A hot mess,
I guess. I mean, she had key pieces, but it was just styled very
lazily. I point to the exhibits above and below.

But thank god it didn’t
last very long. I am going to files these under “Let’s Pretend it Never Happened” folder.

And after many.... many! failed outfits, we find ourselves in a time
period where Miley experimented with a little more polish but armed with
the same pizazz. This is one (below, the red plaid number) of my
favourite outfits from Miley. And I’ll tell you why. This was the moment
(early 2012) that I began to notice Miley’s blooming fashion changes. This outfit screams NY CHIC but has enough personality to not look like its been torn out of Vogue’s sacred pages.

starlets, they have acquired the necessary help to achieve sartorial
status, and Miley had one of the best. She hailed the services of super
talented stylist; Simone Harouche. She is herald for changing up Dirty Xtina to Back to Basic pin up Aguilera (ref: Coveteur). Simone is also responsible for taking over from Rachel Zoe in regards to Nicole Richie’s wardrobe. So our Miley is in good hands really - or maybe I’m biased ‘cause I just love Simone’s work. She has polished Miley up and given her a new identity one that simultaneously separates her from:

Which now brings me to the new hair and why I think Miley is a one to watch on the fashion scene. The haircut is of course a major player in why I chose to dedicate this post to Miley. ‘Cause for as much shit as she got in the early stages of the haircut, she actually looks f***ing killer
and absolutely gorgeous with a crop hairdo. When you think about it, no
one else could really pull off something like that, and Miley does it with such a care free attitude!

And of course, with new hair comes new wardrobe. This one involving a lot of street style inspiration; appropriating street culture as well as some high end flair which produce a style that is editorial, yet accessible. She’s now hanging out with the likes of Cara and Marc Jacobs and has given herself an edge that I think is monumental in a town like Hollywood. You go girlfriend!

ROLLED SLEEVE TSHIRT // PT. 1

I was recently inspired by a top in Glassons for this DIY project. Well, Glassons and some Tumblr street style images. It's not my usual crazy full blown out DIY project - but I think this handy tip/trick could completely change the way you look at a simple tee-shirt. I am psyched to show you guys how mine turn out - but first read on for the inspiration behind this particular DIY.

I have really been enjoying my uniform of basic t-shirts and jeans. You can read more about my latest style inspiration here and here.
As I tend to go for more slouchy/oversized tshirt look, the sleeves
usually fall at such an unflattering length on me. So I have been
rolling my short sleeved tshirt up for a more flattering shape. But this
is no accident - I really love the look of rolled sleeves, on
print button downs or just on a basic tee. It's kinda sports chic
grunge/urban street style - of which I love so much. Although, I think
the kids these days are calling it “Tumblr Style” - either way, I love
me some rolled short sleeves action.

I
think the short rolled sleeves take a shirt from looking dates and
simple to looking more relaxed and thrown together. I know that doesnt
completely make sense, but it does. The rolled sleeve to me looks like
you have put thought into how a piece of clothing hangs on you.
Polished. Am I crazy for thinking so? Maybe. I especially love it on
guys who roll up their printed button downs. Its 50's rockabilly meets
surfer chic. (I just make this shit up as I go by the way - but I feel
like this best describes what I mean).

But in terms of womanswear, its very chic these days to own a
tshirt which you can roll up - case in point; these lovely ladies below.

These ladies exude relaxed and carefree attitude.Always a goal of mine when dressing.

Now,
I don’t know about you, but I find that I always have to keep adjusting
the sleeves so that it doesn’t fall down again. And this can get super
annoying. So I found the perfect trick that can fix this issue. But more on this in part two of the DIY.

Happy Monday gang!

How are we all doing? It's been scorching temperature in Brisbane, but we all seem to have survived. A welcome change no doubt from the previous weeks performance of #thebigwet. But enough of that - lets got on to some new new new music. I am really excited for this week's pick. Starting with the first cab of the rank: Mr. James Blake.

1. RETROGRADE - JAMES BLAKE

IS BACK! And man I couldn't be more psyched. I think for me, James Blake's new album, Overgrown, (out 9th April) is one of the most highly anticipated albums - followed closely by Kanye's (rumoured) new one. This single perfectly embodies what James Blake, and his music are all about, its simple and pretty. He lets the voice do all the talking and occasionally you catch glimpses of instruments that match the timbre and tone of his own raspy voice. We live in an age of over produced and complicated music scenes, and don't get me wrong - I love my share of overproduced mayhem - but I think its brave of Blake to come out and make such minimalistic music like he does. And for that, I always have a special place in my heart for JB.

2. CELWYDD - IFAN DAFYDD

Sticking to ethereal English tunes, this new one from Welsh producer Ifan Dafydd does all the right things for me. Its stunning and soft and everything in between. As you might already know by now, I am a huge fan of instrumentals. and Ifan's Celwydd is one of many beautiful reasons why. Its the kind of song you want to listen to on a cloudy day and read a book or DIY. Just press play, cause there is nothing else for me to say.

3. SALMONILLA - RAZ FRESCO & CHILL WILL

Pause. A little more hardcore after two soft tracks, this ones comes to me from young rappers Raz Fresco and Chill Will off their collaboration mixtpae The Popcorn Tape. It's fresh, hard hitting and heavy. For how young these boys are, their voice and sound is definitely mature. But as much as I am in love with Salmonilla, I can't say much for the rest of their mixtape. You can make up your mind up on it - by downloading it for free here.

4. CHLOE HOWL - RUMOUR

And let's round out this post with another English act - but this time a little more pop flavoured. UK Pop Singer Chloe Howl is coming with all guns blazing this year - with her first single; Rumour. I can only predict that this is going to be a favourite amongst people in Oz. Chloe Howl is very reminiscent of La Roux for me - and not just because of the red hair, but in terms of sound. Pretty excited to see what else this lovely comes out with.

And that my friends, is this week's edition of NMM.

How was your weekend? Have you got some new music you want to share?? Leave them down below. xxxx

Sup Internet,

How you doing? Good. Me? Well, I've been one busy mofo. So much has been happening at A&D HQ from social to work engagements, 2013 had started off with a bang!

The biggest priority I have had is dutifully carrying out my role as maid of honour for my friend Chloe. Helping to organise a wedding is a scary and time consuming process. The last couple of weeks have been spent organising a bachelorette party fit for Chloe and we decided on a weekend away with drinks, pools, conversation and other NSFW activities ;) Food and drinks were organised, as was the guest list and booking the accommodation. But at the end of the day, Chloe had a wonderful time, as did all the other guests. So job well done.

Now its on to organising my dress (inspired by this beautiful Oscar De La Renta dress), shoes, hair and makeup! Aghhhhhh!!! I feel like I haven't left enough time to do any of this. In saying that, I do have a pretty good idea of what I would like for the big day.

#thebigwet - I hope everyone affected by the crazy tornado storms have recovered well from it all. It was pretty horrific to see the same cities and towns be affected yet again by Mother Nature. But great to see that the government have taken some serious measures to help people out. Thankfully I didn't get terribly affected except for losing some power and the internet. Which has now lasted till today. Boo Telstra, you whore.

Jobs, jobs and more jobs. I am now proudly employed as a Lushie (Lush Australia) for the Queen St team. I have been a crazy Lush fan for years (read here and here) and now I am finally part of the team doing all things social media and sales. Woo! But on top of that I am trying to grow the A&D empire. So to help that grow, other exciting progresses are happening as well - which unfortunately takes up a lot of my free time - can't quite reach Future Female Jay-Z status by idling by now, can I? So yes, 2013 is beginning very brightly!

If you made it through all that, then well done. I don't usually do like update posts, but I really felt like writing one. I've been a little more than busy, and I feel like I have written for ages!

Guys, I gotta confess. I freaking love Wil.I.Am.

Well not that you didn’t know that already. The man’s reputation is a little like vegemite, you either like him or you don’t. I posted a track from the Black Eyed Peas leader a few weeks ago (click here for that NMM post) and I knew I would be in a world of shame for it. BUT WILL.I.AM LOVER DONT CARE.

When I heard Scream and Shout, I couldn't help but smile all the way through - whilst I was jumping up and down like an 18 year old at the Family (I totally mispent part of my youth at this hole). No one else can make such filthy sweet electro pop tracks like Will.I.Am can. I don’t have much patience for musicians like Calvin Harris, M83 or the likes, because that kind of repetitive jaring music does nothing for me. But when Will.I.Am does it, he executes the songs with just enough variety and changes, so that you can listen to it multiple times. I’ll admit, I don’t really listen to the words when it comes to this particular genre (cause who are we kidding, its never really that substantial) so the variety in beats and melody that Scream and Shout has, is just perfect for me.

Everyone has these types guilty pleasures, whether its for an artist, a particular song (Gangnam Style, anyone?) or for any facet of pop culture for that matter. And I wanted to take time today to discuss mine; Will.I.Am. He may make some sweet/filthy electro-pop these day, but his roots didn't start with techno, of course. He is responsible for some of my all time favourite songs ever! Of course my love for him started with Black Eyed Peas - I legit own all the albums except for the last one B.E.P released (cause seriously, that was some shit that I didn’t need cluttering my CD tower). His music prowess ranges from the hip hop to reggae and even latin inspired, like the one leading up to the World Cup a few years back. He doesn’t just rap and sing, he also co-produced all B.E.P albums. Will.I.Am is one very talented man.

One of my favourites of all time!

Then there was a solo stint in 2007, where Will.I.Am was responsible for the Songs About Girls album. Which is awesome by the way. He really shows off his softer side. But not without compromising the infectious tracks like The Donque Song and I Got It From My Mama. But my favourite from the album belongs to the oh so lovely track; Aint It Pretty.

His collaboration work is also equally as successful. And I’m not just talking about the recent track with (It’s) Britney (Bitch) Spears. Will.I.Am has worked with Justin Timberlake, Nikki Minaj, Usher and even English songstress Cheryl Cole. No one can deny that Will.I.Am is one hardworking musician. His songs rate and they rate very high, people know what they’re getting into when signing with a Will.I.Am production track. He has a way of pushing artist out of they own creative box and moulds them to be able to pull of (otherwise questionable) genre changes.

So I am sure you can tell that I am very passionate about Will.I.Am. He is without a doubt one of my musical guilty pleasures. Who’s yours?

I feel like I have a neglected a child! I have been so incredibly consumed with some IRL shiz as well as some new projects I am lining with A&D that my gorgeous NMM segment has been slightly left behind. But never fear! I have got four amazing tracks to wash all those blues away.

Ps. How was everyone's Big Day Out experience? Did you find some new artist to jam too?

Found these guys during my music sesh on Concrete Playground (read that article here). Mitzi are half Brisbanites and half ??? But all you need to know is that if you love the likes of Cut Copy, M83 and other soft pop electronica reminiscent of the 80s, then you will love Mitzi. Yay for new Australian music!

Yes, I am still swooning over Nick Waterhouse.. but how can you not! You can read the first A&D introduction to Nick on this post here. This is like my favourite song to go running to. It has the perfect beat, but also cute phrases like "Keep Going... Come On!" - but how can you not love that horn and strings section. There is just something so infectious about his music. It could be a combincation of the genre and production, but its also his voice that gets you sucked into the world of blues and jazz rock and roll! I play my Waterhouse loud and proud!

My friend Dom and I were sitting at a cafe, discussing life as we usually do, when this song came on through the speakers. We were both bobbing our heads and asking each other if we knew who this was. And since neither of us didint - Shazam came to rescue. This is most definitely one of my most favourite apps (for obvious reasons). The app revealed that this soulful track comes from Californian natives, Allah-Las. And since then, I haven't been able to stop listening to their tracks. Its the perfect summer album. Play, enjoy and repeat.

Misun hail from Washington, DC and their first single for 2013 is alive and kicking! This song falls in the category of repetitive songs that you can get on board with and sing along to. They definitely a unique sound which they have harnessed in this single; Harlot. Can't wait to hear more from the three-piece.
